DAMASCUS CHRISTIAN SCHOOL MISSION STATEMENT:

Damascus Christian School’s mission is to assist Christian parents in the biblical training of their children spiritually, academically, socially, emotionally, and physically to help prepare them to be faithful followers of Jesus Christ for God’s glory and the building up of His Kingdom.

PURPOSE:

Damascus Christian School began their Home School Satellite Program, HEARTLINK, in September of 1998. This came as a result of contact with many Christian parents who wished to educate their children at home, yet desired the support and extra opportunities of the Christian school. As part of HEARTLINK, it is possible for parents to educate their children at home and have the resource available to them to encourage them in their sometimes-lonely task. HEARTLINK is a place to glean ideas from others who educate at home, to gain support in areas in which the home school parent may feel ill equipped, and to give their children a more well-rounded education.

STAFF:

Tim Oakley: Principal of Damascus Christian School
Carroll Klingbile: Elementary Administrative Assistant / Home School Liaison
Darla Priday: Bookkeeper
Pam Mattecheck: Secretary

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

1) All students must meet the admission requirements of Damascus Christian School.
2) The parents must be born-again, Bible-believing, Christ-honoring Christians. (An exception may be made when only one parent is born-again, provided the non-believing spouse agrees not to oppose the Biblical teaching of the school.)
3) At least one parent and Heartlink student must regularly attend and actively participate in a Bible believing local church.
4) All students must commit to regularly attend the classes for which they have registered.
5) Students must be tested for placement prior to formal admission interview. (This does not apply to those who only attend chapels or P.E.)

PROCEDURE FOR ENROLLMENT:

1) Request an application packet from the Home School Liaison or the secretary of DCS.
2) Complete all application forms and return to the school office with the one-time registration fee of $50.00 per student. If the student is only attending chapel or P.E. the registration fee is $20.00.
3) Set up a time for required pre-admittance/placement testing.
4) Both the parents and child(ren) will meet with the principal of Damascus Christian School, Home School Liaison, and possibly the grade-level teacher, for the purpose of answering questions, reviewing philosophy and expectations, and to determine what materials are needed. Bring a copy of the student’s most recent achievement test and report card.

ACCOUNTABILITY REQUIREMENTS OF HEARTLINK PARENTS:

1) Parents must commit to making the time teaching their children a high priority.
2) Fathers are to be involved as much as possible, even though the mother may be doing the actual teaching.
3) Two conferences per year with HEARTLINK liaison are required for the purpose of encouragement and accountability. One of these will be at the end of the first quarter of study, and the other one will be at the end of the third quarter of study. The school secretary will set up such conference times.
4) Parents need to attend workshops/meetings concerning home education as they are offered at Damascus Christian School.

BENEFITS OF HEARTLINK:

1) Provides a gradual transition into the traditional classroom.
2) Provides social interaction under parental supervision.
3) Provides opportunity for student to respond to an outside authority and to the format of a typical classroom to a limited degree.
4) Regular information will be put out to keep everyone current on activities and meetings.
5) Consultations with the HEARTLINK liaison as needed. A consultation is when help and/or guidance is needed other than the twice yearly parent teacher conference. This could include a home visit, meetings for the purpose of accountability and/or aiding in a plan that will keep your home school child on target for their appropriate grade level. There is an hourly fee for this service. See the financial information page.

“I am very much afraid that schools will prove to be great gates of hell unless they diligently labor in explaining the Holy Scriptures….engraving them in the hearts of youth.  I advise no one to place his child where the Scriptures do not reign paramount.  Every institution where men are not increasingly occupied with the Word of God must become corrupt.”

Martin Luther (1483 – 1540)
