SYNOPSIS OF HIGH SCHOOL CLASSES
NOTE: Some classes may not be offered each year due to
interest and/or available personnel.
1) ALGEBRA I: 4th period
In this class the student will learn how to accurately perform the
following: writing and evaluating algebraic expressions, operations with
positive and negative numbers, solving equations/inequalities in one
variable including word problems, operations with polynomials,
operations with rational expressions, solving and graphing
equations/inequalities in two variables, and operations with radicals.
2) ALGEBRA II: (prerequisite Algebra
I)
2nd period 10th grade……….4th period 11th grade
In this course you will first have a quick review of Algebra I. You will
then move on to solving first and second -degree equations, many other
types of equations, finally moving on to graphing and an introduction to
trigonometry.
3) TRIG-PRE-CALCULUS: (prerequisite
Algebra II)
1st period 12th grade……3rd period 11th grade
This course includes advanced algebra, trigonometry, all equations,
logarithms, radical equations, rational equations, differentiation and
integration.
4) BIOLOGY: Class is full 2007-2008
5) ADVANCED BIOLOGY: (prerequisite
Biology I) 7th period
A continuation of Biology 1, with a survey of the Kindom Animalia, and
Human Anatomy and Physiology. We will also be doing an ecology unit,
which will include stream and field survey techniques and a survey of
environmental issues from a Biblical Christian Worldview. This class
requires outside reading and homework.
(11th – 12th grades only)
6) CHEMISTRY: (Algebra I prerequisite
with a “C” grade average) 3rd – 4th period
Students will learn about the composition and reaction of matter,
parts of atoms, chemical equilibrium, different gasses, and kinetics.
7) HEALTH: 6th period
This class contains four units. The units are in order: physical
fitness, nutrition, and first aid. The last unit is on the ten body
systems and the diseases that affect them.
8) ACTING SKILLS: Beginners –
Experienced M-W-F 7th period
This class will focus on learning and improving acting skills. All areas
will be covered including voice, movement, improvisation, stage combat,
stage vocabulary and some musical theater.
9) THEATRE THROUGH THE AGES: M-W-F
6th period
This class is a hands-on look at how theater began and has changed
through the years. Some of the activities will include making Greek
theater masks, performing a scene from Shakespeare, recording a radio
theater show, and choreographing a Broadway musical number. Each time
period will include a movie highlighting a show from that era.
10) SPANISH I: 6th period
This class introduces the student to the fundamentals of the Spanish
language including the five major areas needed for language proficiency:
reading, writing, speaking, listening, and cultural understanding. Using
various geographical locations as a backdrop, the class will familiarize
the student with both the Hispanic culture and the Spanish language.
Emphasis will be placed on the importance of learning the Spanish
language for the purpose of expanding God’s kingdom into the diverse
areas of the Hispanic world both local and abroad.
11) SPANISH II: (Prerequisite Spanish
I) 7th period
This course builds on the skills and competencies gained in Spanish I.
The goal of Spanish II is to help the student increase vocabulary,
become more proficient in grammar, and improve speaking and writing
skills. While this class will be taught primarily in English, more
opportunities will be given for the student to exercise his/her language
learning both in the areas of listening and speaking. Using various
geographical locations as a backdrop, the class will familiarize the
student with both the Hispanic culture and the Spanish language.
Emphasis will be placed on the importance of learning the Spanish
language for the purpose of expanding God’s kingdom into the diverse
areas of the Hispanic world both local and abroad.
12) GREEK: M-W-F “0” Period 7:45 a.m.
– 8:25 a.m.
In this course you will learn the basics of the language in which
the New Testament was originally written. You will learn the alphabet
and basic grammar, with an emphasis on nouns and verbs, and do some
initial reading in the Epistle of 1 John. This course will lay the
foundation for further study which will enable you to translate the NT
on your own, to evaluate popular translations (such as the NIV, NASV)
and commentaries, and to base your beliefs and practices on a direct
knowledge of the NT text.
13) WOODWORKING: (10th – 12th grades Tue/ Thur. 6th
period
This will be a class for those serious about learning some practical
skills in the use of a carving knife, carving tools of various kinds,
and a few other hand tools and sandpaper. Project will include a “chip
carved” Ozark Character, some flat carving in basswood, small intarsia
projects, carving a block print for a Christmas card you will print and
various wood-burning projects (pyrography).
Cost is $25/per quarter, $50/per semester, or $100 for the year.
14) ENSEMBLE 10th – 12th: M W F 6th
period
This high school choral ensemble will consist of 10th – 12th grade male
and female students. HALEL will perform sacred and secular selections
ranging from the classics of choral literature, to Broadway, jazz and
contemporary Christian styles. Performances will include school
functions as well as opportunities outside the school arena.
15) INTRODUCTION TO GRAPHIC DESIGN:
6th period
In this class, we’ll be learning about the basics of Graphic Design,
including use of color and typography, along with an introduction to
computer illustration. We will be learning to use tools in the Adobe
Creative Suite 2, including Illustrator and InDesign.
16) ART: M W F: 6th and 7th periods
Art class will begin with a full quarter of drawing. Students will learn
about line, shape, texture, value, perspective and composition using
pencil, eraser, charcoal and pen and ink. Next, students will be
introduced to the color wheel and the three main characteristics of
color-hue, value and intensity. They will learn how to identify and mix
color and how to create balance and harmony in their pieces. Students
will then begin experimenting with many different art mediums such as
acrylics, watercolors, chalk pastels, oil pastels, calligraphy, and
printing. Finally we will play with clay! Students will learn about its
properties, the firing process, hand building techniques, under glazing
and glazing. Hands-on, of course! Throughout the year we will discuss
the different types of art. We will also touch on the lives of some
famous artists and see examples of their work. The class fee is $50 for
the year. This covers the use of all materials and supplies. Students
must bring a long sleeved paint shirt.
17) ART II M-W-F
This class is available for students who have completed Art I and wish
to explore in greater depth and with more freedom the art techniques and
mediums taught in that class. The main focus of this class will be on
the art product. Following a short review of the basic skills and an
explanation of the criteria, students will be given a project which they
will plan, work on, problem solve, and see to completion. These projects
include a still life drawing, portrait painting, non-objective piece,
linoleum block print, clay mask, and a surprise or two….teachers choice!
Students are required to provide all of their own ideas, subject matter
and inspiration – Bring your creativity! The class fee is $50 for the
year, which covers the use of all materials and supplies. Students must
bring a long sleeved, water resistant, paint shirt, safety glasses, and
rubber gloves.
